Hospitality Design

At this point, you probably expect a bright introduction to Michel Brokke: his insights, and why the end of times is near if you miss them. Let’s skip that, shall we? You’re here already anyway.

Michel researches, writes, and meets anyone intrigued by hotels and restaurants. Along the way, he points to what matters most: hospitality design.

Safe is risky

Your researcher on the ground observes where good design hides in hotels and restaurants. With plain facts and not without irony, Michel stresses that you should fail more and better to create such spaces and services.

After meeting Michel, some people run away, while others stay. Both are fine. He doesn’t give answers; instead, he encourages creative leadership by questioning your assumptions about:

Spatial design including topics such as architecture, heritage development, scent design, sonic branding, and sensory experiences.

Service design — including topics such as guest journey design, service rituals, menu & tableware design and micro-personalization.

Meet Michel yourself

Be honest: who doesn’t want to be creative? To design new guest experiences? Or to invent new ways to tie your shoelaces? Read Michel’s articles or hire him for a lecture or session. He will nudge you to look closer, think harder, and realize that a brainstorm is about as effective as a car wash in autumn.

Spoiler alert: “those who seek, shall not find.”

  • Michel writes about everyone trying to create beauty in hospitality, heroes and losers alike. Some find answers here; most just end up with more questions

  • Ideas and “Eureka moments” are often more valuable with help from outside. With that in mind, Michel guides the design of hotels and restaurants. The goal: To break through the assumptions that keep you knee-deep in the swamp of design and innovation.

  • Michel discusses the world’s best and worst hotels, the importance of design, assorted nonsense about restaurants, and ends with the encouraging message that we roam the earth without any grand purpose or meaning. Doesn’t that sound uplifting?

What on earth is hospitality design?

Hospitality design is the complex simplicity of creating good hotels and restaurants. But unlike market-driven innovation in hospitality, design-driven innovation is the radical insight that spaces and services can be different from what we think. Creativity serves as the compass, while failures are merely side roads on the muddy trail through science, art and philosophy.
